Social networking with a Science focus?

by Monica Rysavy on August 10, 2009

I learned about a interesting technology resource for Science teachers today called Scitable. There was an article written about it on Forbes’ site here.

According to site, their content “currently concentrates on genetics, the study of evolution, variation, and the rich complexity of living organisms”. The site is so far geared towards the undergraduate-level student, and allows them to read more than 150 evidence-based articles. But the part that I found interesting was the social networking aspect. By joining this site, students have the opportunity to connect with faculty, researchers, and students from around the world who share a common interest in genetics.

If this had been around when I was taking Science classes – and thankfully because I attended only Business colleges (for the most part) this meant that Science was not part of the curriculum – I think I would have been more successful because there would have been a community I could reach out to if I was having difficulty. I wonder if something like this exists for the K-12 students?
