I read an article this evening by William E. Manning entitled “Choice, Charter Schools, and Education Reform”. It was published in the Spring 2010 edition of Delaware Lawyer, a publication by the Delaware Bar Foundation.
Points of interest
- Wilmington High School – now known as Wilmington Charter School – was Delaware’s first charter school.
- Delaware has 18 charter schools.
- One out of every 10 students in New Castle County attends a charter school.
- If all charter schools were collected into one traditional district, it would be the fifth largest in Delaware.
Mr. Manning mentions, in his article, that two charter schools have closed in Delaware since 1995. He poses the question
“When was the last time the regular system closed a failing school?”
Hmmm…
He also suggests a definition of student success which I think is worthy of further discussion:
“A student has had a successful year if his or her educational achievement gains met or exceeded that which one would otherwise expect in a year”.
Interesting ideas to think about.
